OFF THE BEATEN TREK TO EVEREST VIA ARUN VALLEY

Off the beaten trek to Everest is exactly what this trek is. This eastern approach to Everest via Gokyo Lakes takes us up the beautiful Arun Valley in Eastern Nepal. There is endless variety in this part of the country. The heavily populated Middle Hills are gouged by the mighty Arun River, which has cut through at an elevation of less than 400 metres. The major mountain massifs of Kanchenjunga and Makalu flank the Arun. Inhabitants of this part of Nepal have not seen many Westerners in their villages.

One of the most spectacular peaks in the region is Jannu (Khumbakarna), at 7710 metres. The Nepalese renamed this peak Khumbakarna in 1984 when a committee Nepalised the names of many peaks. Jannu was also called "Mystery Peak" and "Peak of Terror" by early expeditions. A French team made the first ascent of Jannu in 1962. With eight of the worlds ten highest peaks, Nepal is loaded with spectacular mountain vistas. The Everest trek is justifiably famous, not only for its proximity to the world's highest mountain but also for its friendly Sherpa people, picturesque villages, great variety of cultures and traditions, colourful festivals and monasteries. The Sagarmatha National Park is rich with flora and fauna, but the existence of the yeti remains a mystery.

This trek provides an interesting approach to Solu Khumbu (the Mt Everest region). Tilman, the first foreign visitor to Everest base camp, used this route in 1950. It traverses the width of the country, from the jungles of the terai to the high Himalaya from 400m to 5,181m.

We spend 2 days in Kathmandu before flying to Tumlingtar and on to Hille to begin our trek. After 11 days of trekking in virtual isolation we join the main route to Everest at Namche Bazaar home to the legendary Sherpa people. From here we make our way up the less travelled route to Gokyo through forests of rhododendron. On this part of the trek we will stay in local lodges. The valley has the largest glacial system in the region and a number of beautiful lakes. From Gokyo Ri we see magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu This is, I believe, the finest viewing point for these mighty Himalayan giants. Our homeward journey takes us down the valley to Lukla for our exciting flight back to Kathmandu.

TIBET Departures:
18 September to 25 september
 Budget package: US$ 700
 Deluxe package: US$ 1050

Linked to Nepal by the Friendship Highway lies Tibet, The Roof of the World. Still a remote frontier it offers some of the most breathtaking scenery and the highest Mountain Range on Earth.Passing through the countryside of Nepal the scene changes dramatically as the road zig zags through the deep cut, lush Gorges of the Bhote Koshi River and steep mountains before winding down to the stark, expansive plateaus of Tibet.

Roads pass by whitewashed villages of flat rooved, mud brick houses with their smoking juniper chimney's, shepherds herding their long haired goats and yaks, fields of barley, picturesque lakes and mountains and a culture steeped in history and tradition.

The native people of Tibet strike a dramatic contrast to the landscape with their colourfuly woven clothes, bright faces, infectious smiles and resilient natures. Roads wind their way to overnight destinations of Xegar, Shigatse and Gyatse where the monestaries Tashilhumpu, Phalkor and Khumbum are visited. You will find yourself in an atmosphere created by religious art, Buddhist icons, burning butter lamps, insence smoke and resident monks. Castle fortresses, cobbled streets, open air markets and Tibetan fare also set the mood.

Along the plateaus awe inspiring mountain ranges make their breathtaking presence felt on the horizon, with a view of Everest,[known as Chomolongma by Tibetan's meaning "Goddess Mother of the Universe"] seen from Tingri and the sacred mountain of the Snow Lion. The road slowly climbs to where prayerflags and mani stone cairns adorn the high mountain passes and the dazzling Glacier of Mount Nozinkangsa [7,223m] on Karo La Pass [5,010m] looms unexpectedly around the bend. After a drive around Tibet's third largest holy lake [Yamdrok Tso], The Turquiose Lake, a panoramic view can be seen from atop the Kamba La Pass [4,794m].
Winding down following the banks of the Yarlung Tsanpo River , (theYarlung Valley being the birthplace of Tibetan culture) Lhasa is reached by highway. Still a city of intrigue offering experiences and establishments of the old world.

Religious practices and rituals can still be seen, especially around festival times, with the Holiest Temple in Tibet, the 7th century Jokhang, [Llasa's Cathedral] being a pigrimage destination and sacred circumambulation path. Prostrations are carried out daily by devotees in the front of the Temple which is. surrounded by the open air Bazaar of Bharkor where a large variety of crafts and wares can be obtained.

The Potala Palace dating from 1645 looms majestically above the city while the vendors and restaurants of the modern world bustle below. The People's Park opposite makes a good vantage point. The Gates of the Silver Snow Lions guard the entrance to the Summer Palace, [Norbolinka], a peaceful park being home to the remaining residences of the 13th and 14th Dalai Lamas which they occupied for six months of the year. Tibetan artifacts and evidence of the 14th Dalai Lamas connections to the west can be viewed.

5km from Llasa is the Sera Monestary where the Colleges of Instruction are still evident and monks discussing points of doctrine learned during the morning studies can often be seen in the Debating Courtyard during the afternoon. 8km from Llasa, Deprung Monestary, once the world's largest, housed the 3rd, 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas before the building of the Potala Palace. It also hosts some rock carvings and murals of note.
There are numerous additional sights to see around Llasa in the old Tibetan quarter with smaller active temples and shrines. The Cave Temple of Chago Ri, [the hill faces the Potala Palace]], known for its rock carvings. Lukhong, a temple on a lake island in the Ching drol Chiling Park and Gumolingka Island in the middle of the Llasa River makes an excellent vantage point for photos of the Potala Palace.

Shopping opportunities abound in the streets of Llasa where Tibetan and Han culture meet. With a large range of restaurants and local cuisine to experience a stroll around the Lhingkor, the devotional route encompassing the old city may be welcomed.
