ltgroup.JPG (16068 bytes)Namaste and welcome to the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal. Nepal is still one of the few countries in the world where you can escape from the excesses of Western Civilization and yet where tourist amenities are sufficiently developed for your stay to be comfortable.

Outside Kathmandu, its teeming capital, Nepal is a land of remote mountain villages, whose people survive by growing their own food on the thousands of hill terraces that scale even the steepest slopes. Mechanized farming is unheard of here; the fields are ploughed by water-buffalo, the corn harvested and threshed by hand and ground by water mills. If you stay in a trekking lodge, your bread will likely as not be made from flour ground that day, your vegetables freshly harvested from the fields.

Nepal has been a unique meeting place for mountaineers from all over the world. Some have come to scale an unconquered peak, others to undertake scientific research in the high mountains. Today, Nepal sees tourists of many nationalities; some come to complete an energetic trek or high adrenaline rafting trip, others to enjoy the peace and cultural richness of Nepal’s lower slopes and valleys. You can visit villages that are ten days trek from the nearest road, or ones that can be reached in two hours.

LANGTANG RI TREKKING has, since its creation in 1985, been striving to open up the remote areas of Nepal to visitors, whilst providing them with the best possible value for money. A member of the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal, we are committed to trekking in a way that does no harm to the local environment. With camping groups we always carry kerosene, so that no local wood need be used to cook our food. Trekking grades
camping.jpg (6162 bytes)

For many of our treks, you can choose between staying in tea-houses or camping. A tea-house is a local run guest house, but standards vary enormously. In popular areas such as Annapurna, tea houses are more like hotels, with hot water, Western food and private rooms, whereas in more remote areas, they are far simpler and more authentically Nepali. Tea-house trekking is less expensive than camping, and is suitable for small groups. With large groups, irrespective of the area, it is more practical to camp. A team of guides, porters and cooks mean you trek in comfort and provides international-style food of a high standard.

Grade 1

For trekkers with no previous experience, we offer a diverse range of easy treks. By easy, we mean that the trek involves no difficult climbing or ascents to high altitudes, takes usually no more than a week and is suitable for anyone. However, you should not think that loss of height means loss of interest; while our more challenging treks get you closer to a small number of mountain ranges, lower altitude treks often provide colourful horizons of a whole series of ranges. High or low, mountain villages reachable only by several days walk from the road brim with character.

The Ghorepani and Jomsom treks follow well-trodden trails. The tea-houses along these routes offer hot water and Western-style food. Of course, these treks are not popular without reason and you will find the terrain and views superb. If the idea of tea-house trekking appeals to you, but you would prefer to escape from the crowds, then the Helambu trek could be your ideal choice. You trek up to within sight of enormous snowy mountains, and then wind at a leisurely pace through a spectacular green valley. The tea-houses are simpler here, but you will benefit from the peace of the unspoilt villages and the friendly welcome of your hosts. To really get away from it all, try the Shivapuri trek, Siklis trek or the Royal Trek. Whilst you will still pass through many remote villages, these regions are so unspoilt as to have no tea-houses, and you will need to camp. Again, the range of mountains you can view on these treks is superb.

Grade 2

Grade 2 treks are more challenging than Grade 1, and are suitable for any walker looking for something a little more energetic. They are longer (10-20 days,) involve more walking up and down and climb to higher altitudes, where you will be rewarded with close-up views of big mountains. For a well-trodden route with good tea-house facilities, you could choose the Annapurna Base Camp trek, which gets you close to glaciers and affords spectacular mountain views. For something a little more remote, but still  with the option of simple tea-houses, try a trek in the beautiful Langtang region. From the Langtang Base Camp, you have the additional option of scaling a trekking peak. For a moderate trek out in the wilds, Ganesh Himal would be a good choice. With only 100 visitors a year to this region, the local cultural traditions are still very much intact. On this trek, you cross the high Singla Pass (4600m.) The Rara trek is similarly remote and is a good option for the summer season as rainfall is low. As tourists  are relatively unknown in these last two regions, you need to camp.

Grade 3

Grade 3 treks should only be undertaken by those with some previous mountain walking experience. They ascend to altitudes of up to 5500m and involve some steep climbing, although it is never necessary to use ropes. Treks at this level can he arranged for periods of 7-21 days. For a popular and spectacular trek, with the possibility of staying in well-developed tea houses, the Annapurna Circuit is a good choice. A gradual ascent through a green river valley will lead you up to a number of high passes, where you will reach the altitude of 5416m. This trek will give you a close insight into Tibetan culture. Another understandably popular trek, with good tea house facilities, is the Everest Base Camp. The goal of this trek speaks for itself, but in achieving it, you cross a glacier, see Mt Everest and a whole variety of soaring peaks and experience the rich Sherpa culture. For a real adventure in wild and restricted areas, that see less than 300 visitors per year, you could trek in Mustang or to Makalu Base Camp. The Makalu trek traverses many high passes before reaching the Base Camp at 5000m. The Tibetan plateau of Mustang is a wild, treeless desert. The last two treks are possible only if you camp.

Grade 4

Grade 4 treks are only for real adventurers. They involve steep ascents to high altitudes with the possibility of some rope limbing. You’ll need stamina to complete one of these treks, as it can take 20-28 days to journey to the heart of the wildernesses that they cross. All are camping expeditions.

The exception is the Simikot trek, which is very remote with a truly undeveloped culture (quite a shock.) This can be accomplished in a shorter time (7-14 days.) However, you can also use the little-visited Simikot as the starting point for a trip to Mount Kailash (20 days.) A trek through the isolated Dolpo region is one of the few good possibilities for the summer months, as the area gets little rain. Manaslu, like Annapurna, is a circuit trek and passes through Tibetan villages in a little-visited, restricted area. A trip to Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, will take you into the remote far east region of Nepal. Here, Sherpa, Rai and Limbu culture happily co-exist. If you want the ultimate challenge, the Dhaulagiri trek is the most difficult of our featured treks. This wild trek involves challenging trekking on rough high terrain, perhaps with a ropes pitch or two.

HELAMBU Helambu .jpg (8305 bytes)

With a diverse range of brilliant green valleys, misty rhododendron forests and distant horizons of snowy peaks, Helambu is the ideal short trek. There are simple tea houses along this route, yet the area remains relatively unspoilt by tourism. You will experience the Yolmo culture of high mountain villages, marvel at vistas of lonely high mountains and watch enthralled as the farmers toil in the fields using hand-made tools and teams of water-buffalo.

The valley rim lies between 1800 and 2800m and in spring offers early flowering rhododendrons. In autumn and winter there are wonderful mountain vistas which can, from certain view-points, stretch from Everest in the east to Annapurna in the west.

RARA TREK lt10.JPG (7542 bytes)

Jumla and Rara lie in the remote Karnali zone in the north-west of Nepal. The region is made-up of long ridges covered with temperate forests and alpine pastures enclosing high valleys. Summer rainfall is low, but winter snow can be heavy and persistent. Since the region is fairly high and free from monsoon thunder-storms, the summer season is ideal for trekking. Winters are cold, but in the autumn season, trekking is rewarded with a profusion of alpine flowers.

The former village site of Rara (3040m.) is two hours walk                 along the western bank of the lake. Designated a National Park in 1975, Rara boasts an abundance of                 wildlife, including aquatic birds and rich forest around its large lake at a height of 2980 meters. MANASLU TREK

Pristine mountain views, rich culture and genuine adventure sum up the trek experience around the 8156m Manaslu. Opened in 1992, this area offers a combination of rich culture heritage, unsurpassed beauty and biological diversity. Beginning in Gorkha, home of the celebrated Gorkha soldiers, visit the ancient palace of King Prithivi Narayan Shah. Soon after civilisation fades and we pass though ancient villages, observing the simple agricultural habits of its people. Then we ascend the Gandaki River valley, fed by innumerable rivers and waterfalls, offering the chance of a plunge into some bathing pools. From here, the strenuous section begins and yaks begin to outnumber people in the rocky landscape. In Samagoan (3450m) we visit the glacial green lake of Birendra, before crossing into mystic Samdo, a mere 15km from the Tibetan border. Here Tibetan monks inhabit sacred monasteries and combined with the views of Tibetan plateau against stark white Himalayas makes this is a truly spiritual place. Continuing, more monasteries await in Larkya Bazaar, along with the biggest challenge - crossing Larkya La (pass.) This 5213m snow-covered pass demands the utmost respect. Snow-covered peaks over 6500m tower above as we cross. The descent, once off the snow takes us through alpine then tropical areas, bursting with ferns, bamboo, pine trees, waterfalls and aqua-blue green lakes laced with cotton-white beaches. Finally, Manaslu will disappear as we descend to Beshishar (832m.) This 3 week excursion will leave you with a sense of peace and respect for the people of Nepal and its cological wonders.

MUSTANG TREKlt5.JPG (10644 bytes)

Mustang was only opened to trekkers in 1991. The Department of Immigration issues only a small number of special permits, to protect the local Tibetan traditions from outside influence as well as to protect the environment. This semi-autonomous, heavily Tibetan influenced region was described by Tilman as "fascinatingly ugly country, the more fascinating for being so little known." Indeed, the trek to Lo Manthang is through an almost treeless barren landscape, along a steeply undulating rocky trail, from which there are panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and a range of other soaring peaks.

DHAULAGIRI TREK

Dhaulagiri .jpg (6724 bytes)This region is new territory for trekkers. Trekking off the main paths is not only possible, but can be immensely rewarding, though you do need a sense of adventure and an increased ability to deal with unexpected. Geographically, Dhaulagiri region is a land of dramatic contrast. From the near tropical Pokhara valley, steep slopes climb to snowcapped Himalayan giants. Dhaulagiri 1, the seventh tallest peak in the world, towers high above the well-trekked Muktinath pilgrim trail up the Kali Gandaki valley. The vast massif screens the hidden land of Dolpo to its north west. Following the rivers upstream, ferns and forests of oak and other deciduous trees and juniper are interesting. Mountain sides of rhododendron blaze with colour in the spring, and other flowers are abundant on the trail. Even on high mountain passes above the tree line, tiny alpine flowers can be found dotting the windswept ground.

After a breathless climb to the top of French Col (5300m,) the                views of Hidden Valley open out. The broad valley is reminiscent of Tibet and Ladakh and so are the                temperatures, at least -20ºC at night.

DOLPO TREK

Dolpo.jpg (11455 bytes)Dolpo is located inside the Shey- Phoksumdo National Park of mid- western Nepal, behind the Dhaulagiri massif, towards the Tibetan Plateau. Dolpo remains a truly isolated corner of Nepal: time has stood still here for centuries as the inhabitants of Tibetan stock continue to live, cultivate and trade the way they have done since time immemorial. The ecosystem encompasses a wild and wonderful variety of plants and wildlife, including the blue sheep and snow leopard. A trek through Dolpo is an experience not easily forgotten.

SIMIKOT TREKSimikot .jpg (13364 bytes)

SIMIKOT - KAILASH - SIMIKOT

TIBET: Tibet one of those extraordinary destination where indeed adventure lurks around every corner! Adventure on the road is never short on the beautiful Transhimalayan drive, through mountain, passes, promising a panorama of a cultural and scenic diversity unsurpassable anywhere.

MANASAROVAR & HOLY MT. KAILASH: Kailash: Mt.Kailash claimed to be the apex of the Hindu religious axis is also one of the highest mountain in Tibet at 22,022 feet, and Lake Mansarovar at 14,950 feet is said to be the highest fresh water lake in the world. Certainly a difficult region to reach due to the variable and extreme weather conditions. The distance from Lhasa for example is approximately 2000 km.

Only during the last few years have lots of ordinary and not so ordinary travellers, been able to experience this region. Road conditions are difficult much of the time and we have to make many preparations to ensure that we have a reasonable chance of reaching Kailash. We need to bring our own food and camping equipment. Basic lodges and tea-houses can be found but the plateau is so remote that it is possible to travel for several days without finding food available.

To travel for days on this remote plateau with the chance encounters of nomads herding their sheep or yaks is to be transformed into another way of life, to see and become part of such a devout pilgrimage as shown by pilgrims around Mt.Kailash and Lake Mansarovar is to put some aspects of our western way of life into proper perspective.

HUMLA VALLEY: In May 1993 The governemnts of Nepal and China reached on an accord that allowed the first treks across the border between the two countres. While it had been a route for Nepali pilgrims for years, foreign trekkers were never allowed to trek from Nepal into Tibet. It has always been possible, however, to bend or ignore the rules. Though the raison d’etre for this trek it theoriticaly pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash in Tibet, the trek through Humla, Nepal’s highest, northmost and most remote district, is worth the trek by itself.

The lower Humla, Limi valley and upper Humla Karnali valley ar populated by “Bhitias” who trade extensively with Tibet in tradtiional ways that have totally vanished elsewhere. It is only near Simikot, the district headquarters, that you will encounter people of the other groups, mostly Thakuri and Chhetris.

SIGHT-SEEING

LANGTANG RI can arrange a variety of sight-seeing trips to complement your trek or rafting trip. These are just a few of the places of interest that can be included in your tailor-made itinerary.

KATHMANDU

DURBAR SQUARE Kathmandu’s most impressive sight, Durbar Square is a colourful hotch-potch of temples and palaces. It is also home to Kathmandu’s Kumari, or ‘living goddess’, a young girl believed to be a reincarnation of the goddess Durga.

SWAYAMBHUNATH Known as the ‘monkey temple’ because of its resident swarm of apes, this spectacular Buddhist Stupa, from which the Buddha’s eyes gaze serenely down, lies on a hilltop only 2km from Kathmandu. The views down over Kathmandu and the surrounding valley are superb.

bouddha.jpg (14137 bytes)BOUDHANATH 8km from the city centre, this is Kathmandu’s largest Stupa. It’s especially colourful on Saturdays, when Tibetan refugees flock here to pray.

PASHUPATINATH TEMPLE On the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, this Shiva Temple is famous for its two-tiered golden roof and silver doors.

PATAN

The ancient city of Patan faces Kathmandu on the southern bank of the River Bagmati. It’s a colourful place, with Hindu temples and Buddhist monuments jostling side by side in its narrow, winding streets and unexpected squares.

DURBAR SQUARE Exquisitely carved palaces, temples and shrines litter the square, which is dominated by the ancient Royal Palace. Nestling in one corner is the triple-roofed octagonal tower of the 17th Century Teleju Bhawani Temple.

KRISHAN MANDIR The first of its kind to be built, this 17th Century temple is the only one in Nepal with entirely stone-carved shrines.

HIRANYA VARAN MAHAVIHAR A 12th Century, three-tiered Golden Pagoda of Lord Buddha.

KUMBHESHWOR A Shiva Temple with an unusual five-tiered roof.

BHAKTAPUR

One of the three ancient cities of Nepal, Bhaktapur is the home of medieval art and architecture, as well as thriving local pottery and weaving industries

DURBAR SQUARE This spacious, beautiful square is packed from end to end with ancient temples and monuments. These include the colourfully named ‘Lion Gate’ and ‘The Bell of the Barking Dogs.’ It’s a great place to explore for an hour or two and absorb the local life.

NYATAPOLA TEMPLE Dating back to 1702, this five-storey pagoda is an impressive sight. Staring down at you from the terraces are intricately carved figures of wrestlers, elephants, lions and griffins.

Trisuli: This river is very popular for short trips, as access to the Prithivi Highway makes ‘breaking off’ the journey easy. Trisuli is also an ideal beginner’s river. raft.JPG (10938 bytes)

Sun Kosi: The ‘River of Gold’ is considered one of the ten best rafting/kayaking rivers in the world. From Raighat (Day 5) it is only one day’s trek to the Mount Everest view point, so an optional detour is possible.

Kali Gandaki:A total of 105 km covered in Five days with excellent white water, and magnificent mountain views of the Annapurna South and the Fishtail Peak (Machhapuchre.)

Karnali: The far West of Nepal is one of the most remote and least explored areas of the Himalayas. A two day trek with porters carrying all the gear is necessary to reach the put in point. The trip lasts ten days, including trekking, and takes you on a real wild-river adventure. Take out point is Chisapani, close to the newly opened Royal Bardia National Park, where an optional Wildlife Safari through largely untouched wilderness is possible.

Arun: The easiest way to get to this river is by catching a plane to the put in point at Tumlingtar. Alternatively you can drive for 1 ½ days and then trek for three days. The Arun provides some of the most challenging rafting in Nepal, and although the difficult access makes only three days on the river possible, the remote location and spectacular mountain views make this a real wilderness experience.

Seti: The short Seti River makes for an ideal two day introduction to rafting. From the put in point at Damauli, the Seti merges into the Trisuli on the second day. This trip offers beautiful mountain views of the Annapurna South, Fish-tail and Lamjung Himal.

Bhote Koshi: One of the best short rafting trips in Nepal which covers 18 km of continuous white water in just one day.

WILDLIFE SAFARIS

The beauty of Nepal’s natural heritage can be enjoyed by a visit to one of it’s famous National Parks.

ROYAL CHITWAN NATIONAL PARK
Nepal’s most famous National Park is large and covers a diverse array of terrain. Experience mountains densely coated with Sal Forest and swampy flood plains neck-deep in elephant grass. Chitwan is home to the rare and beautiful one-horned rhino, as well as one of the world’s largest populations of tiger.jpg (14912 bytes)Royal Bengal tigers. Hidden deep in the swamps are rare crocodiles and freshwater dolphins. Who knows what exotic sounds and sights you may see from the back of your safari elephant !

ROYAL BARDIA NATIONAL PARK
More remote and less visited than Chitwan, Bardia is a mixture of dry deciduous forest, vast stretches of open grassland and island-filled rivers, rich with acacia and silk cotton trees. Hiding in the forest are the shy herds of wild elephants for which the park is famous. For birdwatchers, more than 350 species reside here, many of them waterbirds. The rivers that attract them are also home to the rare marsh mugger crocodile and the gangetic dolphin.
