Himalayan International Summer Program 1997

(July 10 to August 4)

 

Purpose

 

The Himalayan International Summer program is open to all from all parts of the world. The HISP is permitted to launch first time in Nepal by his Majesty's Government of Nepal. This kind of program is first of its kind in Nepal and South Asia. The HISP is center for learning in an international context. Offering various courses in Social Sciences. The HISP courses are based on Tribhuvan University syllabus of Social Sciences. The academic support is from Tribhuvan University, Banseshwor Campus, teacher, staff and Environment and Development Society, Kathmandu Nepal.

 

The school academic staff consists of Tribhuvan University and Mahendra Sanskrit University instructions and other qualified professionals.

 

The main purpose of the HISP is academic, cultural exchange and entertainment. To fulfill this goal, there will be international evening, informal get-together, sports and organize private excursions into various places of Nepal. The gathering of many nationalities from different countries of the world. This all will help to increase understanding and goodwill among nations.

 

Admission

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Approximately 150 students will be selected on the following basis:

* Applicants present evidences of attending or having attended a recognized education at institute.

* A working knowledge of English is absolutely necessary for all participants.

* The HISP has rolling admission policy. In other words application will be considered in the order of their arrival.

* Participants need to be in good health-both emotionally and mentally for studying aboard.

* The last date of submitting application is June 10, 1996, however the HISP is unable to accept more than 150 students, for this session earlier application is encouraged.

 

 

 

Housing

 

HOUSING AND FOODING SERVICES

Participants will mainly be housed at Hostel and Hotels. HISP can take any hotels or hostel running privately taking on lease or contract for the duration of the summer session only. This place will be located in the beautiful surrounding and very close to city.

 

There will be few single rooms, the majority of the students will share double room with room mates. This we think, will provide a unique opportunity for friendship across the borders. Married students will be provided with double rooms.

 

Common rooms are available for general use until midnight. Three meals will be provided daily. Tea and coffee will be provided round the clock. The menu mostly includes Nepalese, Chinese, Indian and Continental dishes. HISP offers varities of extra curricular activities to all participnats. The programs listed below will be conducted. Besides these, on request of students, the administration can arrange a number of social activities.

 

Activities

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

 

* Kathmandu valley sight seeing, lecture, slides and field trips.

* Swagatam program : A grand welcoming program will be held in traditional Nepali style "Swagatam" means welcome.

* Opening ceremony : Official opening of HISP 1997. First session of the ceremony will be conducted as a festival, including university teachers, students and Govt. officers.

* Special Yoga classes : A special yoga class will be managed to all the participants.

* Nepalese Folk Dance : A night will be Nepalese Folk Dance Night by well known cultural group of Nepal with participants of HISP students.

* HISP Party : Dance, lottery and many more exciting events will be sponsored by various public and private parties.

* International students talent evening : An evening with the gathering of all the participants where talent students of HISP can show their talent (skill) in various fields (song, cultural heritage, dance, music, etc.)

* Kathmandu City Reception : Dinner party with night club.

* Farewell Party : All participants will gather for a farewell party at the end of the session. The officials of HISP will organize the program followed by a dance and presenting of souvenirs to all participants by HISP.

* Guided Tours : Guided tours (in English) will be organized for groups of 20-25 students to the parliament house, museum, library etc.

 

 

WEEKEND EXCURSIONS

 

The HISP arranges a number of excursions to culturally and scenic interesting areas of Nepal.

* Lumbini : The lord Buddha's Birthplace and holy place of Buddhist all over the world, 250 km southwest of Kathmandu in the border area of India. A major pilgrimage with shrines and ancient Ashoka pillar.

* Pokhara : Small town 200 km west of KTM, a valley of lakes and canyons, where Himalayas above 20,000 ft , there will be a recreation. Among the diversions : Boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, riding.

* Gorkha : Former home of the present ruling dynasty, with fine old palace and good mountain view. On the half way to Pokhara.

* Chitawan : Jungle preserved in the southern Terai, 125 km southwest of KTM. Home of wildlife like the tigers, leopards, rhinoceros, ghural, bear, bison and deer. Visitors tour on foot by canoe and on elephant back.

* Nagarkot : Look out point at 7,000 ft. Northeast of KTM, adjacent to a reserved forest, excellent mountain panorama and sun rise view.

* Hiking trips : Hiking trips in Sivapuri wildlife reserve near KTM valley.

* The Trishuli river Rafting.

 

RECREATION, SPORTS, VIDEO AND MUSIC

Surrounding of Kathmandu is an ideal center for hiking, cycling. Ordinary summer clothes are usually suitable to the Kathmandu climate in July and August but jackets, raincoats and comfortable walking shoes should be included. Clothes worn at the summer school are usually quite casual, but one party dress or suit is needed.

Video show of English/Nepali films will be shown on every Sunday night. Sports facilities will be provided. There will be a show of Nepali folk dance and classical music. Television facilities for News will be in common room. Newspaper and magazine will be provided in common room.

 

SCHEDULE

The classes will start at 9.30 and run until 17.00. Saturday and Sunday will be for extracurricular activities.

The breakfast time will be 7.30 to 8.15, lunch time 13.00 to 14.00 and dinner time will be 18.00 to 18.45.

 

ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY

The administration will be handled by HISP handling committee. All academic programs is the joint efforts of Tribhuvan University, Baneshwor campus, Environment and Development Society and HISP academic committee.

COURSES

All courses are based on Tribhuvan University Diploma level syllabus.

 

CULTURE, HISTORY AND LITERATURE

This course offers an introduction to contemporary culture and literature situation of South Asian countries and Nepal. Some knowledge of History of the countries Bhutan, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka (because all these SA nations have similar history). These courses will be guided by the outline of cultural activities of SA nations provided by South Asian Association of Regional Countries Secretariat in KTM.

The course is divided into three categories:

* Introduction of culture, history and literature of SA nations

* Present situation

* Comparative conclusion

 

POLITICAL ECONOMY OF SOUTH ASIAN NATIONS

All SA nations are mostly bound by similar political and economic situation. The course purpose of this course is to give basic concepts and situation of SA countries with special reference to Nepal. The course gives present picture of Political situation and political history, basic economic policy of these nations and policy towards future of these countries. A lecture will be delivered by the experts and the political personalities of SA nations.

 

 

BUDDHISM

The basic concept of this course is to give general information of Buddhist philosophy to the students. The half of the course will focus on the theories and methodological aspects connected with topics in Buddhist religion in present context. The course also focuses on various wings of Buddhism. The Tibetan Buddhist situation will also be one of the part of the course. The course includes frequent field trips to various shrines (Buddhist temple Soyambunath, Buddhanath) and the birth place of lord Buddha (Lumbini). The course also includes trips to Kathmandu and Pokhara valley.

 

HINDUISM

The course provides basic principles of philosophy of Hinduism and various wings of Hindu religion like Jain, Shikh and their customs, culture, traditions and philosophy including site visit of the temples. Nepal is only one Hindu kingdom in the world so that the students can obtain a much more knowledge. The course has aims at giving the students an opportunity to visit the King (the only Hindu king in the world). This will be finalized later only.

 

YOGA

In this course the students will be provided with practical and theoretical study of different aspects of yoga by expert yogis and teacher from Mahendra Sanskrit University and World Hindu Association. This course can be taken as a part of other courses.

 

LANGUAGES

The course will provide the basic knowledge of the four languages (Nepali, Sanskrit, Tibetan and HIndi) to the interested candidates. For further study of the languages (to the interested students) HISP will arrange programs with the co-operation of Tribhuvan University and Mahendra University in Kathmandu.
