Mount Kailash Trek
To all the world's Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bonpos, Mt. Kailash in the high, remote western sector of Tibet, is the center of the universe and the holiest of holy mountains….the throne of Shiva…the peak that pierces the Heavens and makes a way for the Gods to visit the Earth. It definitely looks the part, rising like a tall, rock and snow dome from the windswept plateau. On its spotless white 22,000-feet summit legend says, the worlds of humankind and Gods meet. Pilgrims come all the way from the tropical plains of southern India and beyond to walk the ancient, shrine studded pilgrim trails that circle the base of the holy-peak. Following in their footsteps, walking alongside rugged nomads, Hindu holy men and jewel-adorned aristocrats on horseback, it is easy to believe, as they do, that a single pilgrimage around Kailas burns away a thousand years of ignorance and bad karma. Breathing that rarefied air, eyes filled with brilliant rock, snow and sky, passing a veritable Canterbury Tales-worth of medieval style fellow travelers, magic seems logical, the power of the place undeniable. Before or after completing the circuit, the group will visit the exquisite, colorful Lake Manasarovar, also considered to be very sacred. Hindus bathe in the these sacred waters to cleanse themselves of sin.
