Restricted Area Treks
These trekking areas are different in many aspects from ordinary ones. Trekkers need to acquire special permits which costs more than normal charges. Trekkers must be part of an organised group with a registered trekking agency. The group must be accompanied by government-appointed Liaison Officer. Groups must consist of a minimum of 2 clients plus the required staff. The main objective of declaring these areas ' restricted' is to protect the natural environment and culture from outside influences. GAT offers following trips in restricted areas;

a. Upper Mustang Trek( 10-15 days) north of the Annapurna Range - enter the area via Kagbeni
b. Dolpo Trek - western Nepal ( 15 to 28 days )-
c. Manasulu Trek - northwest of Kathmandu in the northern sector of the Ganesh Himal( 21-24 days )-

UPPER MUSTANG
Once inaccessible,The forbidden land of Mustang is now open to trekkers, and offers an unforgettable
experience beyond the Annapurna massif. Mustang is north of the Annapurna circuite, beyond Jomsom,
Kagbani and past the sacred shrine of Muktinath and the Manang valley. Mustang is the one of the most
unspoiled and least traveled places in Nepal. Being under the rainshadow of the Himalayas, the area
receives scanty rainfall. This makes Mustang dry and arid...very similar to the adjoining Tibetan
plateau. To preserve the natural & social environment,His majesty's Government has fixed the quota at
1000 heads per season.
This trip begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Jomsom via Pokhara.People wishing to include the
Annapurna resion with their trek in to Mustang can start their trek from Pokhara to Jomsom, passing
along the bank of the Kaligandaki river towards Kagbani. On the route, the trail passes the village of
Tangbe, Samar, geling and Tsarang which is considered to be one of the most interesting places
of the trek.In ancient Tsarang(about 800 years old ),a set of human hands, said to belong to the site's
master builder, remain. according to legend, the king cut the builder's hands off to prevent him from
constructing another place to rival it.

We then arrive at the walled capital,"Lo-Manthang", dominated by old Buddhist monasteries. on the
return journey, we visit Muktinath, one of the holiest of Hindu temples. Then we follow the route to
Jomsom from where we fly to Pokhara and back to Kathmandu.
