ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS

1994 - 1995

As one of the programmatic activities, Puja regularly participates in consultative sessions on global environment and development to disseminate Nepal-related information to interested parties.

Puja seeks to play a catalytic role during those interactions to bring the representatives of the international institutions and Nepalese environmentalists together and help them engage in the collaborative ventures that are collectively beneficial to the global community as well as local population.

Currently, Puja is also working closely with the World Environment Center, New York to explore a possibility of introducing the smoke-less brick-making technology in Nepal. This low-cost and environmentally sound technology was developed by the Pacific-Adobe Co., California and has already been tested in Thailand with promising results. A successful adaptation of the aforementioned technology in Nepal is expected to help lower the level of CO2 emission in major urban areas in the nation, particularly, in Kathmandu Valley.

Recently, Puja had an opportunity to serve as the NGO representative for South Asia in the Third Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council Meeting of the World Bank held in Washington D.C. (February 22-24, 1995).

In 1994, PUJA signed an Agreement of Cooperation with the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) to promote educational opportunities for Nepalese entrepreneurs and professionals in the United States. Under this agreement, Puja has successfully developed a short-term research program in sustainable agricultural development with full cooperation of the Department od Agricultural and Resource Economics, UMCP. Our Research team is presently working under the leadership of the internationally renown Agricultural Economist, Professor and Assistant Dean, Dr. John Moore, to explore a feasibility of sustainable development of high-valued biological resources (eg. endogenous barley species) in Nepal for distribution in South Asia region as cash crop and food supplement. The outcome of this research is expected to shed some lights on the process of preserving endogenous natural resources within the context of biodiversity concept.

Puja will continue to remain involved in the local economic activities that provide environmental benefits to global community.
