Dear Traveller,
Namaste and Greetings from Nepal!
WELCOME TO THE MILLENNIUM
In 1953, when Tenzing Norgay and
Edmund Hillary stepped on the summit of Mt. Everest, they not only
conquered the highest mountain in the world, but also put NEPAL in
the world map. The first tourists arrived in 1955 followed by the
state visit of Queen Elizabeth ll of England. By the 1970s tourists
were pouring in to explore this little known Himalayan Kingdom. Much
to their delight, they discovered Nepal is not all mountains.
Barely 150 k.m. south of the capital,
Kathmandu, lie the great plains (terai) that stretch on to India and
much of it is covered in thick jungles, where most of the world's
Royalties, once used to hunt,. These same areas and jungles are now
classified as National Parks, and conservation areas. Between the
towering snow-capped mountains and the topical terai and found a
fascinating varieties of animals and bird species. Tiny Nepal is
also home to more than 200 ethnic groups of people speaking as many
languages.
The Kathmandu valley, once known as
Nepal is a treasure trove of artistic accomplishments unique in the
world of art. Hindus and Buddhists have co-existed in absolute
harmony since ancient times and this is reflected in the religious
arts and monuments found within the three cities of the valley. No
wonder the Kathmandu valley alone has a record seven World Heritage
Sites-unrivalled in the world. Recent developments show an attempt
by concerned authorities to curb pollution and a trend towards
safeguarding the environment. Preservation of Nepal's architectural
heritage must receive priority over industrial development.
The unique, natural and cultural
beauty of NEPAL will enthrall you, the customs, temples, pagodas
will mystify you, taking you back centuries, in this land, where
Lord Buddha, the apostle of Peace, was born. The people, wherever
you go, are always smiling, and are very hospitable. Above all, this
is one of the safest places in the world to visit.
