In Kathmandu valley and its vicinity Kathmandu Durbar square, is a wondrous cluster of ancient temples, palaces, courtyards & streets. The most famous among are, Hanuman Dhoka palace complex, Living Goddess complex and Kastamandap (which is believed to be carved by single Sal - Shorea tree) and the name Kathmandu is derived from this building. All major state & religious ceremonies, including of solemnization of coronation etc are carried out in this complex even these days. Patan Durbar Square offers marvelous monuments within a limited compound which has old royal palace, dominated by grace & grandeur of 17th century Krishna temple, entirely made out of unique stone. This temple has shikara style structure of 21 pinnacles. Tush hiti, Sundari chauk, Taleju temple & Keshav Narayan chauks are other landmarks within the compound. Besides, in the vicinity other highlights are the golden temple of Hiryavarna, Rudravarna mahavihar and Mahaboudha temples. Bhaktapur, the 2nd largest & most preserved medieval town among other towns in the valley is located 14 km in the east of Kathmandu. The Bhaktapur Durbar square is splendid palatial complex with its gems in the artistic masterpieces as the 55- window Palace, the Golden gate,Golden spout(Lun- Hiti), the Taleju temple complex & Nyatopla, the 5 stories temple. The 15th century Dattatreya temple, world famous Peacock Window, the tera cotta windows & Nepals largest Shiva Lingum are other attraction to keep visitors spellbound. Swaymabhunath Stupa, one of the oldest Budhist shrines at a hilltop ( 77m) is situated 6 km to the southwest of the city. This is a huge monument of huge dome like structure surmounted by 13 gilded rings representing 13 Heavens and an elaborate canopy. Pashupatinath Temple, is the holiest Hindu shrines in the world . The temple is of two storied & has the sacred Lingam or the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. This temple dates 4th century & renovated to present shape at around 18th century only, is an exquisite examples of repousse art &most noted for its gold plated roofs & silver coated doors. Boudhnath Stupa, is one of the largest Budhist stupa in the world. The unique highlight of this great Buddhist monuments is- it is set in the octagonal Mandala design, with the niche around are the hundreds of prayer wheels & the 108 images of Budha adorning the stupa. This also has about 4dozs of monasteries in its vicinity . Changunarayan temple, located atop a serene hilltop, is another temple of lord Vishnu, the oldest pagoda temple existing in the Nepal dating back to 4th century built by king Mandeva. Nagarkot
(2175m) in the east is 35Km from Kathmandu. It is a finest hill station, with the
stunning views of the Himalayan range, including Mt. Everest with beautiful sunrise &
sunset veiw. This hillstation is far from the crowds of hustle & bustling of Kathmandu
city, yet at very small distance suitable for visit in short time. Dhulikhel(1140m), another hill station offers an essence of Newar township with its pagoda style & cluster of human settlement, enthralls with beautiful panoramic mountain views & sunrise & sunset. Godavari,
boast of the Royal Botanical garden. Another attraction is a month long Hindu festival
held at every 12th year. It has the huge collection of flora around & in
well preserved green house. Birdwatching is another aspect of nature one can enjoy here. Namoboudha
, is Buddhist pilgrimage site & an ideal place for hikers. The rows of stupas
adorned with fluttering prayers flags are very soothing. The highlight is the image of
Budha in his compassionate manifestation & portrays a famous legend relating that
Buddha in his previous life had offered his own flesh to save a starving tigress & her
cubs from the imminent death. Lumbini , the birthplace of Lord Gautam Budha is located some 250 km west of Kathmandu. The highlights here are the sacred garden, the stone pillar dating 250 B.C, a sacred stone, that pinpoints the exact birthplace of Budha. The sacred pond, Puskarni, lies right besides, where queen Mayadevi took her ritual bath right before she gave birth to Lord Budha, the enlightened one.Gorkha, is historically very important town of Nepal, where the seeds of the birth of modern Nepal were sown. Conquering King of the Shah dynasty launched their campaigns from Gorkha and ultimately unified Nepal. The famous Gokrkha soldiers carry their name as a tribute to their valor during this conquest. Gorkha palace the royal building is perched atop 330m above Gorkha town, with spectacular mountain views. The walk unto this palace is worthwhile to savor the splendors of nature. There is also a temple of Goddess Kali, the manifestation of female force. After every 15 day there is sacrifice in this shrines which attracts flocks of human. Just below the palace is a holy cave of a reclusive saint Goraknath, who used to live here that derives the name Gorkha. Pokhara, one of the most popular destinations in Nepal, is 200 km in the west of Kathmandu. Pokhara offers numerous lakes and the mountain like Annapurna ranges, Machapuchare, Lamjung Himal, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri and many more, that are breathtaking. Lake Phewa offers relaxed boating & fishing with the views of mountains as mirror image in the lake. This is also a famous gateway for Annpurna trekking & mountaineering sports adventures. Royal Chitwan national park, is one of the finest National Park in Nepal. This park offers tremendously rich wildlife ( one horn rhino, tigers etc, one of the biggest collection of birds ( app. 450 sp) & flora that are found in its natural habitat. Park also offers some of finest wildlife resorts that caters all tourist service. Royal Bardia national park, in the western terai some 500 km from Kathmandu also offers finest wildlifes found in Nepal. This could be another good choice to avoid the crowded Chitwan National Park. Koshi Tapu, in eastern terai, is a popular natural habitat for numerous flora & fauna that are found in Nepal. Kositapu offers an excellent habitat for aquatic species of birds that are resident & migrants. The wild buffalo or Arna, found only in this place so far, is the highlight of this place.
